About me

After many decades working  in the orchestral world in Europe, North America and China, I now share my experience with orchestras, opera houses, concert halls, festivals, cultural foundations, building projects and individual artists.

As former Chief Executive and Artistic Director of a number of major international symphony orchestras, I now utilise my knowledge to help organisations keen to find new ways of creating environments where music and musicians can flourish and communicate with audiences old and new.

Along with colleague musicians  I have led Music Director searches for orchestras which I managed resulting in successful long term appointments of Simon Rattle and Sakari Oramo (CBSO) and Gustavo Dudamel (Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra).

Initiating and fostering  relationships with politicians and decision makers nationally and locally in Birmingham resulted in steadfast support for the building of the world’s first Symphony Hall where the acoustician (Russell Johnson of Artec, New York) was a key partner from day one. Twenty-eight years on, Symphony Hall still maintains its status amongst the three or four finest halls in the world.

The  festival “Towards the Millennium” in Birmingham, London and Vienna from 1991-2000, spearheaded by the CBSO  was also realised as a result of bringing together people and cultural bodies to create a ten year celebration of the arts of the 20th century.

These are some of the areas where I believe I can contribute to orchestras, cultural bodies and cities with existing or newly created cultural projects.

Whilst I don’t claim to have all the answers, I think I am good at asking the right questions and enjoy exploring  solutions and working together to develop strategies for achieving success.
